I couldn't reproduce your results on NT 4.0 or on FreeBSD/X.

The error message box is *probably* trying to complain about an error in
the display filter expression, which would explain why there was no
problem with "Prepare" (as that just modifies the expression, it doesn't
compile it and apply it as a filter), but why it showed up with no
message I don't know.
