Yes I think I used packet-menu.4.diff. Selecting Match (any type,
AND, OR etc) caused the error. Selecting prepare (any type)
was OK (nothing happened).
Hm, I'm not able to reproduce your results. In source code I make check, if selected column can have filter expression (and protocol col can't). In case it can't, program will do nothing. And code for checks and generation of filter is same for Filter and Prepare menu. 
I have no idea :-(
