Initially it was probably because it was new functionality which might not have
been completely stable. Now it's probably just because that's the way it is
and/or to save CPU and memory in the default case. It probably does make sense
to enable it by default. But I'd like to do a performance comparison before
changing it (something I can't do until I'm home).
