Now I am getting some where. here is the error I get when I try to run ethereal in a terminal
-bash: ethereal: command not found.
I also get the same message when I use X11.
I was not aware of the need to change the Display environment variable. I also have no idea how to change this value.
when I use the tethereal command it seems to work I just do not have a GUI to work from.

So what happens when you try to run Ethereal? Note that if you're running it from a Terminal window rather than an xterm window, you'll need to set the DISPLAY environment variable to :0.0.
