Attached is a 26 packet capture file. As you can see, sometimes source and
destination are in host name format, in other cases the same hosts are in
dotted quad IP notation.

Configuration -

Compaq Armada 1130 laptop. Win95A. Ethereal. Hosts file C:\ETC\ETHERS

Hosts are -
00:80:c7:0b:57:85    192.168.0.100    Laptop    o/s = Win95A
00:c0:0c:b0:31:ec    192.168.0.40    PC4    o/s = WinME
00:00:6e:24:2e:cc    192.168.0.20    Linux    o/s = Red Hat Linux V6.2

Ethereal is started from Windows Explorer.
Edit->Protocols->NetBIOS->Apply->OK.
Capture->Start->Update list of packets in real time->Automatic scrolling in
live capture->Enable name resolution->OK.

Question:-

Why does Ethereal sometimes display source and destinations as translated
host names, and sometimes as dotted quad IP notation?

Doug.
