Typically, you work around the pedants with something like:
"As a special case, ethereal is allowed to be linked against the OpenSSL 
libraries", or words to that effect, in the license.

problems this implies if you want to be squeaky clean.

There are other options though, depending on what is easiest to integrate from 
both programming and licensing viewpoints:
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/cryptlib/download.html is reasonably 
well known and probably sufficiently portable.
