on bug 10337
from Jeff Morriss
I'm not able to reproduce this problem: when I open a file that has externally
resolvable names that aren't resolved in the capture file[1] and I have "Use an
external network name resolver" disabled then those IP addresses are shown as
IP addresses.
[1] Note that if your capture file:
a) is a PCAPNG file with a Name Resolution Block
b) (or) has some DNS packets resolving the IP address in question
... then Wireshark will resolve those names regardless of the "Use an external
network name resolver" preference setting. "Use an external network name
resolver" just means "don't ask the system name resolver [usually DNS]."
There is a new option 'Only use the profile "hosts" file' which might do what
you want.
Are you sure Wireshark is doing external name resolutions to resolve those
names or are you falling into one of the other cases above?
