A quick look in configure.ac found me the "--enable-usr-local" option (never
knew that was there!).  Looks like that could be made generic or we could add
an "--enable-opt-local" option.

You mean the problem of picking up the wrong libs?  I don't think so: Jeroen,
at least, thinks that configure and libtool can figure things out normally and
that would be my expectation of the way things should work.  (I'll have to dig
out an old RPM, install that, and give all of this a try to know for sure.)
