BTW, the way Safari handles this is that the drop-down menu has, at the bottom, a separator line and a "Clear Recent Searches" menu item. (It also has a greyed-out item "Recent Searches" at the top, presumably for the benefit of those who don't know what the menu is....)
Preview (the OS X PDF viewer) does the same; I don't know if this is a general convention or not. 

I also don't know what other desktops' conventions are.
