well checking again now that I'm home from work... after 5 minutes it has captured 6500 TCP packets! Mna there is something going crazy on my pc sending and/or receiving packets. So being a total newbie how do I see what it is sending these packets? there are also some HTTP and TLS here....

Well thanks for the info. I'll check again tonight and see what kind of packets they are. Maybe I was running a program at that time..... But I'll check again.

That depends on what type of packets they are. Cablemodems tend to have an awful lot of ARP traffic, so if the majority of those packets are ARP packets (and they are spread evenly over the 6 hour period) then this probably isn't something to be concerned about. However, if your PC is moving large amounts of data on a TCP/UDP port, then you need to make sure you know which application is responsible.

Subject: [Ethereal-users] 250000 packets?

Hey everybody, I am totally new to ethereal. I just ran a random capture last night before I went to bed to see what would happen. When I got up it had capture almost 250000 packets in 6 hours. Now I was wondering is this normal for a cable modem? Or is my computer going crazy sending and receiving packets? I am on a cable modem with winXP.
