I assume by your reference to "the madwifi driver" that you're running 
Linux (on BSD, that driver is just the standard Atheros driver; on other 
OSes, it's not available).

I think you might have to capture in monitor mode to get the radiotap 
header (which includes whatever radio information the madwifi driver 
supplies).
