No, it's capturing packets from the beginning ... I just changed the time
format and went to  several sites, noting the start time of the capture.

If you start the capture *without* "Update list of packets in real 
time", and later stop the capture, do you see any packets?

If so, then the reason you see no packets with an "Update list of 
packets in real time" capture is that you're not capturing any packets.

If that's the case, then:

	What capture filter are you using, if any?

	Are you plugged into a switch, or into a "switching hub", or into a 
dual-speed hub on which all the other machines are running at a 
different speed?

	Is there any traffic being sent by or to the machine running
Ethereal 
on the interface on which you're capturing (or on any interface, if 
you're using the "any" interface on Linux)?
