Tethereal isn't doing anything different from tcpdump here other than reporting different things (unlike tcpdump, Tethereal says what the problem is with no IPv4 address being assigned; unlike Tethereal, tcpdump reports that 5 packets were handed to the filter but discarded because they didn't match the filter, and warns that you don't get the full decode that it can do because -vv wasn't supplied).
