This brings up a question in my mind, though, especially with a new Ethereal release coming. What's left before a 1.0 release? Are there a few core features that need to be implemented? Some polishing-up that needs to be done? With a few tweaks could Ethereal finally be ready for 1.0 status?

This is actually a decent article. It definitely has its technical issues, and things left out: It's odd that the author neglected to point out the extreme cross-platform capabilities of the product versus the other analyzers reviewed. He didn't mention the fact that not only does Ethereal decode a huge number of protocols not touched by the other products, but in general the quality and accuracy of the decodes is FAR beyond the other analyzers. He didn't even mention that Ethereal is the only product mentioned with an actual display filtering system (offset filtering during post-capture analysis doesn't count). Overall, though, not bad =)

"6 Network Protocol Analyzers" in the July 2004 issue of Windows & .Net Magazine has very nice things to say about Ethereal. A couple of quotes:
"Ethereal is one of the best open source programs ever made."

"Ethereal includes all the features that you typically find in a
protocol analyzer."
