Actually, your former employer's driver for at least one of their
gigabit interfaces does so, with no option to turn it off.  (And their
systems use PowerPC processors, just as the ones AIX 4.x runs on do.

So perhaps he should buy a PowerMac - I don't know whether the shiny new
G5's Ethernet interfaces have a driver that captures the FCS, but they
might.
