Graham,
I had the same issue, with the same version of the binaries, i.e:
ethereal 0.9.15
expat 1.95.6
gettext 0.12
glib 1.2.10
gtk+ 1.2.10
libiconv 1.9
libpcap 0.7.2
zlib 1.1.4
-->
# . /usr/local/bin/ethereal
/usr/lib/dld.sl: Can't find path for shared library: libcrypto.sl.0.9.7
/usr/lib/dld.sl: No such file or directory
Abort(coredump)

This library can be found in the openSSL lib.
See:

http://gatekeep.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Languages/openssl-0.9.7b/

I installed and then was able to finally run ethereal.

Greetings
Sylvain
