Using sudo, it worked

Obviously I have no idea what I am doing, I thought it would be sufficient to start ethereal as root (as it is on Solaris)!

Are you superuser when you run Ethereal? Are you running "sudo ethereal"?

Without proper access Ethereal can't capture from the interface.
