You can get that error message due to a fault in the mdshdr disector in Ethereal 0.9.9.

That fault has been solved after Ethereal 0.9.9 was released.

However I'm not sure if the scenario you have is related to this bug
or if there is another problem.
You can try to deactivate the mds (MDS Header) protocol in Edit/Preferences and see if you still get a problem.
