To Linux Users of Tethereal,
I am trying to determine the configuration I will need to watch a web
server farm.
I am currently using Windows 2000 but the machine is too slow switching
between processes and doing all the graphics junk.
I would like to know which version of Linux I should use and what
hardware would be needed to handle watching the traffic of 20, 60, and
100 web servers in a farm configuration.
Please tell me CPU speeds, if I would need multiple CPU's, (yes I know
that it is not supported yet), amount of memory, and anything else that
would affect the performance of the box.
I don't want to start a Linux platform flame war. Just a couple of
suggestions on a Linux distribution that can be hardened easily, has low
requirements on the CPU, and can run Tethereal lightning fast. The data
from this machine will be used for logging all activity on the server
farm since turning on logging on each machine causes 2 problems. The
first being it slows down each machine, and the second is that I have
multiple log files all with different clocks that I have to merge.
Instead I can turn off logging on the individual machines and have one
log file that does not need to have the times synchronized.
