"Doesn't work" in what sense?

If you mean you can't sniff other machines' traffic (i.e., traffic not
sent to or from your laptop), note that Ethereal (and other
libpcap-based programs) can handle "monitor mode", where the card is
listening to traffic not intended for the machine, only on Linux and,
for some cards (but not the Linksys card, as far as I know), FreeBSD -
and, even on those OSes, it can't do it with all cards:
