I.e., some program printed or displayed a message "can't load files
bigger than 6400k"?

If so, what program was it?  (Ethereal itself - including the library
internal to Ethereal that reads capture files - has no code to report
such a message; if Ethereal issued such a message, it must have come
from some library with which Ethereal is linked.)
