>From my own experience, it's either IE or MS Proxy Server that does it. I was never too sure because either MS Proxy or our ISP was messing up the downloads, and I couldn't tell if IE of MS Proxy created the braindamaged behavior of saying the download was successful. If you're running MS Proxy Server you wont be able to use Netscape through it because MS use a proprietry authorisation protocol. My problem was that MS proxy was sitting between me and the web and I couldn't even run a standalone FTP client. Try Netscape or a standalone FTP client if your net access doesn't firewall them out. Otherwise always check everything you download. -- Richard Urwin, Software Design Engineer Ricardo Test Automation Open House, 3 Watling Drv., Hinckley, UK. rurwin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: Guy Harris [mailto:gharris@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: 20 October 2001 08:32 To: NormW Cc: ethereal-users@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [Ethereal-users] Download errors On Sat, Oct 20, 2001 at 03:56:10PM +1000, NormW wrote: > Got an NT 4/SP6 box with IE55sp2 and every time I try to download the > new Windows release of Ethereal(0.8.20), the download terminates early > by truncating the amount to download;...sometimes it will get 2MB, other > times 6.3MB but what ever it has got so far, the Message displays > "Download Complete xxx bytes", with the download bar going straight from > wherever it is at to 100%....Is this something wrong: 1) at your end, > 2)with my machine or 3)windows in general? With your machine, with Windows in general, or with IE 5.5 in particular, I suspect. I generally download it with Netscape 4.x on NT 4; try installing Netscape, if you don't already have it installed, and see if you can download it. If I try using the classic HTTP client "telnet", I get: % telnet www.ethereal.com 80 Trying 65.208.228.222... Connected to www.ethereal.com. Escape character is '^]'. HEAD http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/win32/ethereal-setup-0.8.20.exe HTTP/1.0 HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 07:28:22 GMT Server: Apache/1.3.17 (Unix) PHP/4.0.4pl1 Last-Modified: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 19:16:47 GMT ETag: "2406d-6d1462-3bcdd91f" Accept-Ranges: bytes Content-Length: 7148642 Connection: close Content-Type: application/octet-stream Connection closed by foreign host. so it looks as if it gives a reasonable size (that is, in fact, how large the file is) and a reasonable Content-Type. Perhaps IE 5.5 is mishandling the download. _______________________________________________ Ethereal-users mailing list Ethereal-users@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.ethereal.com/mailman/listinfo/ethereal-users
