To see the raw 802.11 frames, you must have a way to put the
card into a monitor mode.   WLAN cards only pass along the
Ethernet frames to the host, making the Ethernet frames the
only ones that Ethereal can see.

If you are running Linux, I'd suggest you try the Prismdump
utility (referenced on the Ethereal site) and the WLAN-NG
utilities to dump raw 802.11 frames and sniff specific channels.

I am looking at a trace dump of 802.11 frames passing my Wireless
Network Interface (a 3Comm Wireless LAN card). I don't see any of the
802.11 control frames - those generated by the RTS/CTS mechanism for
example. Everything seems to be a data frame/ack/syn, all of which
are generated by higher layers.
