thanks for the help - here are detailed instructions in case anyone else wants the same results... 

1. cd /usr/ports/devel/glib13
2. make install
3. download ethereal source tarball, unzip, untar
4. cd /usr/local/bin ; cp glib-config-2.0 glib-config
5. make sure /usr/local/bin _and_ /usr/local/include/glib-2.0 are in your path 
6. from untarred ethereal source directory, run:
      ./configure --disable-ethereal
7. make ; make install
8. done.
