Thanks for the tip.  It looks like the problem I encountered is
a low-level libpcap issue under Linux.  (Eesh, all I wanted to do
was to learn SNMP, with the help of ethereal! :)

Thanks again for the references.  I started reading a book
called "SNMP: A Guide to Network Management", by Sidney Feit, but
never got around to finishing it.

Are there any good C++ class libraries for doing SNMP work?  I have
seen lots of different things on the web, but am not sure which ones
are good.  I have also seen a company that makes Java SNMP classes
(http://www.adventnet.com), but haven't tried those.
