I made a mistake and the problem is actually fixed in libtool 1.5.10, 
released in September 2004.  By inspection of the code, it seems the 
problem was introduced in libtool 1.5, and is not present in 1.4.

Perhaps it would be sufficient to put a note of the problem on the Wiki 
and in the INSTALL file.
