We'll confusing it is.

Every time I read the word read filter, I don't even know if it's using the capture or display filter syntax.

Simply use the terms display / capture filter corresponding to the syntax might not be perfect, but a lot less confusing than the term read filter in my eyes.

E.g. if I open a file, I might understand what a capture filter at that moment probably means.
