OK, it's the MS or the UE.  The newer version of the diagram makes that 
a bit clearer (and is also easier to read by virtue of being larger, 
although it's a bit wider than the browser window size I usually use at 
home.

(The handset should probably be labeled "UE" in the UMTS part of the 
diagram.)

Is the "R" interface between the PC and the MS/UE formalized by any 
GSM/UMTS standard, or is that pretty much just a fake serial line with a 
fake Hayes-style modem?
