So what was the grep that wasn't working?  We might be able to arrange 
to avoid using it, or at least give advice on how to avoid it.

(Or perhaps make-tapreg-dotc should be Pythonized, just as make-reg-dotc 
was, so that if you have Python the Python version, which would do its 
own regular expression matching rather than using grep, gets used; that 
still leaves a problem for people without Python, however.)
