Yeah, the current GTK+ file dialog is, I think, modeled after the Motif
dialog, which was, I think, modeled after (or followed the same CUA
specs as) the Windows 3.x dialog.

It's not considered one of the more attractive parts of GTK+; the intent
is, I think, to have a new one in a future GTK+ release (it's under
development, but I don't know if it's intended for 2.4 or 2.6).

  
On the other hand, writing our own file handler dialog will be lot's of 
work to do, so it's still on my wishlist...
    
We might just want to wait for the GTK+ folks to do a new one (or pick
up one of the alternate GTK+ file selection dialogs that I think are out
there).

  
I tend to search for a better one out there, as my feeling is, that we will stuck on the GTK1 parts still for a while now.

Do you have any suggestions of a good "modern" file dialog or even better a widget?

Or at least a good starting point where to search for it?
