Somebody (I forget who) was, as I remember, thinking about doing that.

Fine, as long as we don't have any platforms we care about where GLib doesn't support run-time loading.

Note also that not all dissectors are self-contained entities, so we might, in some cases, have multiple dissectors bundled into a single loadable module.

and 3) the filter descriptions were in a separate file, or even a whole tree.

That's already been done in CVS, if by "file" you mean "man page file".
