I use that feature all the time and it is one of the best of ethereal.

What I wanted to know was the purpose of "User Specified Decodes". Is is just a report of the "Decode As" feature or can you use it to remember the "Decode As" selections?

Sometimes protocols do not run on the registered protocol port (like
HTTP-based applications), or the capture does not include a redirection from the registered port (like in WSP). In order to decode such packets anyway,
you just select the packet, right-click and choose "Decode As...". Then
select the protocol you expect the packet belongs to.
