Or an item in the preferences file.

However, the preferences file is accumulating more things that aren't
preferences in the sense of things you set from Edit > Preferences -
such as the default position and size of Ethereal windows, and the most
recently visited directory in the File Open dialog.

I guess one question would be whether they all belong in that file or
not.

If not, what's the criterion for putting them in another file?

Whether they're editable from Edit > Preferences, which would leave out
the geometry, most recently visited directory, toolbar show/hide if
that's only available from the View menu, and recently opened files?

Or whether they're explicitly set by the user as settings, which would
not leave out the toolbar show/hide?
