I was looking for an open source packet sniffer for Unix, because I
wanted to decode a proprietary protocol I'm using at work.

When I found ethereal, I easily added my own dissector. I started
maintaining my own set of patches for it, and adding things I needed in
the official ethereal : LAPB and X.25 dissectors, Radcom and nettl
support in wiretap.

Then I decided to add plugins in ethereal because maintaining my patch
was painful.
