Wireshark currently has some global capture preferences and a bunch of
per-interface preferences.
When it starts, it uses those preferences as the default; if you override
them in a capture, the new settings are remembered and are the default for
the next capture in the same session. If you quit and restart Wireshark,
it reverts to the preferences.
Would it be preferable to remember the settings from session to session,
so that if you quit and restart Wireshark, it defaults to the settings
from the previous capture?
I think not. It would be OK if it remembered settings for a short period
of time, but if I change something and don't run Wireshark for a day or
week, I will have to go look at all of the settings to see what I might
need to change. Always starting from a known point is a great benefit for
me, I think it would be confusing to not know what I might have changed a
week ago.
If remembering settings is desirable for some, then I would suggest a
Preference that enables this behavior and a button that sets the settings
back to the default.
