Yes that' was what I was thinking, Perhaps a similar aproach to what you did in your patch would be possible?

Use a buffer initiated with "."?

Unfortunatly I can't profile a solution.

Maybe.  I'm guessing we'd probably want to improve decode_bits_in_field() to avoid those g_strlcat() calls by keeping track of the offset.
