Hi,
Yeah, well, legal speak is always difficult. And it's always a matter of
interpretation. Therefore we refer to the GPL website for the details, since the
situations are always different.
I'm not sure about what you mean by "a dissector is not a core part of
Wireshark". What else is Wireshark than a conglomeration of dissectors with an
engine in the middle?
Thanx,
Jaap

It's just the case of the dissector that might be worth mentioning
explicitly. On the face of it a dissector is not a core part of
Wireshark but from a GPL standpoint it is absolutely a part of the
Wireshark program and must be GPLed as well.
At least, that is now my default (== least risk) interpretation until a
lawyer joins in and tells me otherwise (probably taking some weight off
my wallet in the process).

Hi,
I think http://www.wireshark.org/faq.html#q1.9 basically covers it.
But maybe the title could be better.
Thanx,
Jaap

Hokay, so a dissector links with GPL code and must therefore be
provided
as source. Might be worth adding this as a note to the FAQ, whoever
controls it, just to make it clear.
Thanks!

Apologies if this is already known, but I couldn't find the answer in
the FAQ.
We have created a dissector for Wireshark and would like to provide
it
to our customers. Is a dissector considered a part of Wireshark from
the point of view of the GPL license? In other words, are we
required
to give the source code for the dissector to our customers?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
