Hi,
I have to side with Ulf on this one. This panel has to be user action
oriented, like a launchpad for his/her most usual actions. That is what the
items you list are for. Any additional information clutters the interface,
which is not a good thing.

No, that's what the about dialog is for. I want to avoid too much
information on that page, because it will get more and more confusing
and less informative.
Umm, and the list of recent files it what the file menu is for, and the
list of capture interfaces is what the capture interface menu is for?
I really think that printing the Wireshark logo *and version* would be
a rather useful thing to do at startup.
