Confirming Barry's technique in comment 3 as one way to replicate this issue.

Start a capture.  Apply a display filter that does not match any of the current
packets.  One such trivial filter is "!frame".  As soon as any new packets
arrive focus will move out of display filter field.  If one is persistent,
quick and a bit lucky it may be possible to eventually edit the display filter
between the arrival of new packets.

Workaround: Click on the "[X]" on the right end of the display filter text
entry field to clear the current filter.
