on bug 11280
from Alan Bowman
The files are all named runningxx_yyyyy_zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.pcapng, where xx is a
channel number which doesn't change very often, yyyyy increments with each file
(occasionally restarting if I restart the capture process), and zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
is the timestamp that the file is created.
I tried moving a capture file to an empty directory, and it opened instantly.
I tried creating 3000 empty files in the same directory (named "1", "2", etc) -
it still opened instantly. I then duplicated the single capture file 1000
times in the same directory ( "1.pcapng", "2.pcapng", etc) and tried a couple -
each one opened instantly.
I'm not sure I tried enough (or know enough about the process) to rule out
filesystem/disk caching in the previous tests.
When I'm back at that PC tomorrow I'll try your suggestion of renaming a file
in the original directory.
Note - the delay occurs after I have selected the file to open, either from a
dialogue box or from the recently-used menu. There is no delay in populating
either of those mechanisms.
