I guess the next step in diagnosing your problem would be to do as I did: do a
Wireshark capture while trying to open a file from the Samba server and then
see what the Samba server is telling Windows about the file.
BTW are there any non-ASCII characters in the server name, path name, or file
name? I know there have been issues with that kind of thing in the past.
