Jeff and I discussed a similar case recently and decided that -1 means you
expect there to be *some* related data, and so it is correct to throw an
exception if there is none. As far as I can tell from the code, the elements
being added had no specific relation to the underlying bytes, so using a length
of 0 seems appropriate. As this is what your "temporary" fix does, I'm happy to
mark this fixed.
