OK, we now

    1) install the icons as part of "make install"

and

    2) install them under $(datadir).

If your desktop can't find them under $(datadir), your desktop is either broken
(file a bug) or misconfigured (fix the configuration if you configured it, file
a bug if you didn't).

If some command needs to be run after installing the icons, we will add that to
"make install".
