Actually, it appears to be a bug in *dumpcap*; if you do

    mkfifo /tmp/wspipe
    cat pipe_trace.dmp > /tmp/wspipe
    dumpcap -i /tmp/wspipe -w /tmp/badfile

The /tmp/badfile it creates is a pcap-ng file that gets an error if you try to
read it.
