This is not really the right place to discuss features of asterix dissector,
but since we already started I will give one more idea.
If you take a look at wiki page of dissector
(http://wiki.wireshark.org/ASTERIX), you can find a link at the bottom for the
asterix plugin for Wireshark. The good thing about this plugin is that the
source code is generated. I have an idea that we would make some XML file with
asterix categories specification. Then with some XSLT or similar mechanism we
would generate dissector source "packet-asterix.c". The only task of adding a
new category now is adding the same information in different form on five
places in the source. This could be automated, would minimize errors and
simplify adding categories. That way caterogy could be added by someone without
knowledge about C programming.
