Complete patch for new formats
r54495 (from bug 9066) now makes file extensions as a heuristic more
acceptable. I believe that would require changes to make this patch compile as
well as reopen the opportunity of using file extensions (which it sounds like
is really desired/makes things easier for these file formats).
Still not sure how to handle the lack of cross-platform build configuration
support...
