A few fixes and more cleanup
My apologies, I wasn't at latest trunk. Disagreed with a few of the whitespace
corrections (which I changed), but committed patch to rev 54205.
So is the problem with (most of) the remaining global variables that they are
being passed between "elements" and there isn't a function argument that they
would specifically fit in?
