I am in favor of sharing more code and the current method using macros seems
the best trade-off in achieving that. Looking at tools/checkhf.pl, that script
will possibly be greatly confused by these macros, but that could be solved if
that script started using a real preprocessor instead of disabling `#if 0`
only.
