After giving this a little more thought, I think the second patch is the way to
go here. I think I became confused earlier with the terminology being used,
"OUI Extended Ethertype" vs. "Extended OUI".
Here we're talking about the former, and section 12.3 only says (to quote
again), "The value used for the OUI component of the protocol identifier is an
OUI value assigned to the organization that has developed the vendor-specific
protocol." It does not say, "The value used for the OUI component of the
protocol identifier is an *Extended* OUI value assigned to the organization
that has developed the vendor-specific protocol."
I'll let this sit a bit in case there are other opinions on this; otherwise
I'll commit the *2nd, alternate* patch soon ...
