Came up with a much simpler fix in r49606.
I generated a ~50MB test file by concatenating the sample a whole bunch of
times. It now takes about 3 seconds to run on my machine.
(I expect your 220MB sample to take 20-30 seconds now, though I'm just
guessing).
I will schedule this for backport to 1.10 since it is a fairly significant
improvement. Thanks for pointing it out.
